People Are 'Food Sequencing' for Weight Loss & Swear by the Results

World Wide Web is full of weight loss inspiration. TikTok has many short clips of people sharing their meal prep hacks, healthy recipes, favourite fat-burning workouts, and new trends that helped them lose weight. TikTok users swear by "food sequencing" for weight loss. Question: What is food sequencing? Eat This, Not That!

I spoke with Lisa Young, Ph.D., RDN, author of Finally Full, Finally Slim, a nutritionist in private practice, and member of our Medical Expert Board, who explained this healthy eating plan and why it helps you lose weight.

Food sequencing is basically a way of eating in which you eat low-starch or green vegetables first, then protein-rich foods and fats. An important carb would finish off the meal.

"This practice of eating can be beneficial for weight loss as it is not only important the types of foods you eat, but also the order of intake," Young adds. Weight loss can be achieved by starting meals with fiber-rich foods that slow digestion and sugar conversion.

According to Nutrients, eating protein and/or fat before carbs increases "glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1)" secretion.Young says GLP-1s slow gastric emptying "which also promotes satiety." "However, with that said, what you eat and how much you eat matters more than the order of when you eat."

Food sequencing may help you stay on track and feel satisfied while losing weight because snacking throughout the day can lead to weight gain.
